Education: What Can Be Done?
Across Africa, schools are under-resourced and often teachers do not get paid. Many schools are forced to shut down. Even in schools that are running, a lack of educational infrastructure is also a major issue.
The provision of meals for primary-school aged students at school goes a long way to improving the children’s health. This can enhance the quality of education, student’s concentration and attendance rates at school.
Promotion of vocational training can teach children practical skills such as farming, computer literacy, carpentry, and basic infrastructure maintenance. Schools can also be used as a platform for training in basic hygiene, HIV/AIDS and malaria control.
To promote further learning and a desire for academic achievement, scholarships can be put in place for the brightest students in each community, allowing them to go on to further education and gain the specialist knowledge which is greatly lacking in these communities. Books, writing materials and uniforms can be purchased for all students
