Teaching in a Maasai School
Location: Kimuka, Rift Valley Province – 1.5 hours drive from Nairobi; near Narok, Rift Valley Province - 2.5 hours drive from Nairobi
Suitable for: anyone
Date constraints: nil
Teach English, maths or science at a school in a tribal Masaai community in the Rift Valley.
This program allows you to live and work in Kimuka, a Maasai village in the Rift Valley southwest of Nairobi or in a community near Narok, a Maasai-dominated town in the Rift Valley west of Nairobi. Staying in a village homestay with a Maasai family, you will teach a class at the local primary school and have the chance to immerse yourself in all facets of village life and Maasai culture. In time off you will be able to explore the local savannah, which is filled with giraffe, gazelle, baboons and hyenas.
Teaching by volunteers is important for a number of reasons. Not only does it give local children the opportunity to get close teaching attention, it improves their skills in English – their third language but an official language of Kenya and the key to further education and opportunities. The basic help that we take for granted in the western world goes a long way in this part of Kenya. Volunteers have a significant and long-lasting impact on a large group of children and previous volunteer teachers in Kimuka have been remembered by the children long after they have left.
Not only does your visit have the potential have a massive impact for a large number of children, but also it provides you with an experience you will never forget and the opportunity to make life-long friends.
