After decades of conflict, in 1994 the world watched the most efficient genocide campaign unfold between the Hutu and Tutsi population in Rwanda. The genocide devastated the country, leaving it with limited infrastructure, the lack of human resources and thousands of orphans. Today the country is slowly getting back on its feet and is now one of the safest countries in Africa. Since 1994 the Rwandan youth have become increasingly more aware and active in demonstrating their future expectations and responsibilities to ensure peace and stability within the region. However due to the genocide, over 67% of the population are under 25 and therefore capacity building remains a prevailing need.
Never Again Rwanda is a human rights NGO in Rwanda working from its, Post-conflict and Peace building Centre located in Kigali. While NAR has made much progress in providing a forum of discussion, conflict resolution and understanding of human rights, they seek further training modules on issues of social justice, development and human rights. In collaboration with NAR, GAPS have developed a train-the-trainer program which will build the capacity of local university students to run workshops on such issues. Participation as an intern in this program involves researching and creating training modules on selected topics in collaboration with Rwandan youth through the use of the internet. Additionally guidance will be given by academics, and training personal.
The internship consists of two parts. Interns have the option of participating in the first part of the project or both parts of the Project.
Part 1: Developing training modules in collaboration with Rwandan students, using template training modules and researching issues of social justice, development and human rights to establish adequate resources for Never Again Rwanda.
Part 2: Rwandan Based Intensive Internship allows participants in the first part of the project to visit Rwanda and take part in an intensive internship with Never Again Rwanda. This involves working and living with the Rwandan University Youth Leaders to finalize training modules and provide training to the leaders to increase their capacity to train the youth of Rwanda. Furthermore it includes visiting established development organizations and understanding development project implementation
Optional: Volunteer in Kenya before Internship commences in July
