Education in Kenya

Primary school education

Despite the Kenyan government’s commitment to universal free primary school education, there remains significant challenges.

Many existing schools in Kenya manage with only very limited resources. Many children do not have writing materials, and up to six children can share one text book. Chalk and blackboards are scarce and classrooms are, at best, basic.

Although there has been provision for schools across Kenya, access to these schools can be problematic. For some children, even the nearest school is a four hour walk away.

Moreover, children often cannot afford to buy the books or uniforms necessary to enrol. Insufficient nutrition can also lead to a fatigue and an inability to concentrate which impedes many childrens’ prospects of a quality education.

Secondary school education

Secondary school education in Kenya costs approximately A$500/year. In a country where the average annual wage is only approximately A$1500/year, this presents a major financial challenge to most families. A secondary school education – so often taken for granted in the developed world - is therefore out of reach for the majority of Kenyans, no matter how talented.

Without this level of education, a person in Kenya has less of a chance to break free from the cycle of poverty.

You can make a difference in Kenya by entering a partnership, donating or volunteering.
